European Power Systems, together with WADE Canada hosted a gas engine and combined heat and power symposium and networking event on Friday, July 16th at the MaRS Centre in Toronto.

Event attendance more than tripled our expectations. Originally planned for 40, the day brought together 124 industry professionals from Canada, the U.S. and Europe.

“This overwhelming response demonstrates the tremendous interest from customers, technology providers, project developers and engineering firms to develop CHP projects”, says EPS President and Chair of WADE Canada, Jan Buijk. “High efficiency energy generation technologies combined with progressive business models can offer competitive returns for investors and customers while providing efficient solutions to our energy supply challenges. Innovative applications such as CO2 Fertilization in Greenhouses using flexible CHP technologies are changing the way we think about optimized energy generation.”

Three main themes emerged from the day: 1) the need for more show case projects, 2) the importance of introducing a Clean Energy Standard Offer Program in Ontario and 3) the increased role of energy efficiency through on-site energy generation. “Combined heat and power, solar thermal, waste to energy and controls in communications are important technologies that will increase Canada’s competitiveness in the clean energy industry,” said WADE Canada President, Anouk Kendall. “I was very happy to see several competitors in the room having frank and open discussions about the need for collaboration in supporting the growth of this market.”

Marion Fraser congratulated the organizers on a tremendous conference. “I have attended many energy conferences in the last five years and this symposium seems to show an inverse relationship between cost and value. It’s value was so much more than its cost!”.
